How To Be A Spiritual Atheist

How To Be A Spiritual Atheist

Word Count:
542

Summary:
Being an atheist doesn't mean rejecting spirituality. Here is one atheist's understanding of the spiritual.

Keywords:
atheist, spiritual, new ideas

Article Body:
A spiritual atheist? Perhaps it's a strange concept if you only think spirituality has to mean a belief in a god. Do the two have to be related? Many people think of the historical Buddha as a spiritual person, but most don't know that he never expressed a belief in a god. He even discouraged his followers from such "speculation," preferring that they work on their salvation in this world.

<b>Computer Spirituality</b>

Imagine a computer that has begun to get so complex and powerful that it starts to ask questions "outside the box." It starts to become conscious. The first thing it would realize is that for all its computing capacity, it is still very limited. The humans who use it, most of whom can't begin to understand it's complicated algorithms, still are more powerful. They see the world more clearly.

The computer could recite a million facts, perhaps, and yet not know what to use them for. It could describe human psychology, and yet not understand a smile. It wouldn't even know why it existed, or what it was being used for. If it came to understand these limitations, and to actually wonder about the world outside its circuits, and to desire to see more, and to grow - that would be computer spirituality.

<b>Atheist Spirituality</b>

An atheist simply doesn't believe in a god. There isn't sufficient evidence, so there is no belief. Contrary to what many think, there is no need for an atheist to disprove that a god exists, anymore than a Christian needs to disprove that the world is ruled by intelligent termites. The burden of proof is always with the person making a positive assertion.

An atheist can recognize the mystery of life, and marvel at how everything learned deepens that mystery, pushing "final" causes further into the distance. An atheist can recognize his or her own limitations, and seek to grow, perhaps even by developing contact with "higher powers." This is an atheist spirituality. How is it different from "regular" spirituality?

The difference is that an atheist feels no need to pretend to understand the mysteries - no need to create gods and religions to explain them. Contacting "higher powers" can simply be tuning into subconscious resources through meditation or other means. Are these "higher powers" nothing more than electrical patterns in our brains? We don't know, and we don't have to know to tap into them.

Is it that atheists don't want to know? It is the opposite. "Understanding" by forcing religious explanations on things short circuits any search for the truth. How can you understand and integrate new evidence when you are no longer questioning? Better to simply use spiritual tools like "intuition" and let them be understood - or not - with time and real evidence.

Look to the past, and we see how narrow-minded people were, and how little they understood compared to us. We will appear that way to people in the future, as they will to people further into the future. We are growing in our knowledge and power, but like that spiritual computer, our circuits are in a box that we need to grow out of. Seeking the way beyond that box is what makes one a spiritual atheist.

How much of the Bible is literally true?

How much of the Bible is literally true?

Word Count:
1137

Summary:
A lot of people think we have to believe the Bible literally or not at all. Others think the Bible contains only stories, myths, or legends. What's the real deal? Is there literal truth in the Bible?

The literally true writings in the Bible are generally in the form of telling about historical events, even if it's written about differently than we write about history today. Can we believe the Bible when it comes to its history?

Keywords:
Bible, literalism, God's Word, Word of God, biblical history, Jesus, Virgin Birth, Heaven and Hell, Sin, Death

Article Body:
If you don't believe the Bible literally, does that mean you must conclude that Christianity is based on biblical myth – literally fiction and stories passed down, generation to generation, from our ancient ancestors? That the only way to read the Bible is to read it metaphorically or metaphysically?

Absolutely not. There's great history recounted in the Bible. But the Bible is more than just history. It is a book of faith written by people who had undergone a transforming spiritual experience or who believed they had "seen" their God at work in their history. By "transforming" I mean an inward turning-around: things/ideas/values that were not important to you now are; those that were of great significance now aren't.

Biblical people tried, as best they could, to put that experience into words, just as I tried to tell the story of my own spiritual transformation in my book, How the Bible became the Bible (Chapter 9). Trying to tell that story, I learned that it is very difficult to verbalize or communicate deeply personal spiritual transformations. Regardless how I crafted, reshaped, and eventually reworked my verbiage, my soul still felt as if I had missed the mark.

At the same time I also know if I tell my wife: "Honey, I'll love you 'til the moon turns blue," it doesn't mean that I think the moon has turned blue before or will turn blue sometime in the future. It means I'll love her forever. If someone were to find this note of mine four or five centuries from now, they would need to understand a little bit about the 21st century, a little bit about American culture and its many greeting card "festivals," and a little bit about being a middle class professional in that culture in order to comprehend what I was trying to say to my wife. If they didn't understand any of that, they could very well conclude I believed the moon had (or could) turn blue. So, why is it when we read statements like this in the Bible, we think we have to believe them literally? We understand poetry and song lyrics. These kinds of words evoke imagery – "… 'til the moon turns blue." It is the same with the Psalms, for example. Verses in the Book of Psalms were written as praises or songs to be recited, chanted, or sung at temple festivals. Why do we think their references (e.g., to angels) are more literally true than lyrics to one of our songs or poetic verses in a Hallmark greeting card?

So, what can be established as being literally true in the Bible?  Speaking in the broadest of brushstrokes, I think we could conclude the following to be pretty accurate:

• The overall history and culture of the Patriarchs, most of which was recorded from Chapter Twelve to the end of the Book of Genesis.  This is the time of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and their culture, which is very similar to and very influenced by the Code of the Babylonian king, Hammurabi.
• A great deal of I-II Samuel and I Kings – stories about Samuel, Saul, David, and Solomon – most of which was recorded by the Court Historian;
• Historical references, overall events, and cultural undertones in the Old Testament during the Schism between Israel and Judah and their independent exiles – Israel to Assyria and Judah to Babylon;
• Stories of Jesus' teaching during his two-year ministry – especially his cynic-like one-liners and his many parables of the new, inner Kingdom of Heaven;
• Jesus execution in Jerusalem just prior to Passover;
• The general history of the times reflected in Paul's original eight letters – I-II Thessalonians; Galatians, I-II Corinthians; Romans; Philemon, and Philippians.

"Okay," you say. "I'll buy that. But what about heaven and hell? What about the final destruction of the earth? What about the Virgin Birth? What about …?"
Good questions. Let's take these major concerns one-by-one.

Heaven and Hell: Heaven and hell are here on earth, not just in the hereafter. If you have a loving relationship with God, as you understand God, while you're physically alive – that relationship will continue after your physical death. That's the message of Easter. If you don't have a transforming relationship with a Higher Power while you're alive, you won't get it after you're dead.

The Second Coming: The general consensus among scholars, both Christian and Jewish, leads us to conclude that virtually all the references to some form of final destruction refers to a final destruction of life as the audience knew and understood it. For example, many Jews, Christians, and Jewish-Christians all believed the Roman destruction of the Jerusalem temple in 70 CE was the beginning of the end of the world. The Jews believed it was a final punishment of God. Christians and Jewish-Christians believed it was the coming of the Lord Jesus, as predicted by the Apostle Paul, who thought it was just around the corner. So, he counseled people not to have sex, not to complete business transactions, and other admonitions. Theologically – not literally – it was the end. It was the end of the Jewish Temple-State of Jerusalem. It was the end of life as Jews, Christians, and Jewish-Christians knew and understood it at the time.

The Virgin Birth: The Virgin Birth became an important doctrinal belief as the derived Doctrine of Original Sin became more and more defined. Of course, there are always stories about the birth and childhood of any significant public figure. George Washington became the great Revolutionary General and our first President. As parents and teachers taught youngsters about him, especially after he had retired then died, stories about Washington's youth began to grow – the cherry tree incident or the account of throwing a silver dollar across the Potomac River (which is almost a mile wide at his plantation in Mount Vernon.) The same kind of phenomena occurred with Jesus, as well. There were stories. Many Jewish-Christian mothers tried to liken his birth to the birth of Moses. However, as the Doctrine of Original Sin was being hammered out several hundred years after Jesus' death, the concept of the Virgin Birth took on a new significance. If Original Sin were true fact, then no person could be born naturally without being in Sin. Jesus could not be in Sin if he were to save us the way the theology was proclaiming. Therefore, he wasn't born "naturally."

It becomes important then to understand a little about the biblical culture, the authors, their audiences, and the events they were addressing. This lets us "see" the people of the Bible as real people. "Seeing" the people of the Bible as folks just like us allows Spirit to touch our hearts just as it did theirs.

Reflections on a New Image

Reflections on a New Image

Summary:
Occasionally I have an identity crisis.  I think that's good.  From time to time I have to ask myself questions like:  Who am I?  What am I doing?  Do I like doing it?  Am I good at it?  Will it help the world? and How does the world know I'm doing it?

Occasionally I have an identity crisis.  I think that's good.  From time to time I have to ask myself questions like:  Who am I?  What am I doing?  Do I like doing it?  Am I good at it?  Will it help the world? and How does the world know I'm doing it?

It began this time when I asked a friend and colleague to help me with the process of reexamining my business card and letterhead.  Since my last printing, I had expanded the way I work with voice, conflict and aikido, and I wanted my visual image to reflect the changes.

I thought it would be simple. She'd take all my questions and resolve them in some way that would be clear, concise, and visually pleasing.  She did -- but it wasn't simple, and I wasn't prepared for what lay ahead.

When she showed me her ideas I literally stepped back, wide-eyed, and almost stumbled over my chair.  She presented a new, much more powerful image of me and my work. It was very different from the look I'd grown accustomed to, and it simultaneously shocked and delighted me. It also began an internal process of discovery that has been quite interesting.

Aikido and Power
I thought I knew who I was. I just had some questions about how to visually integrate the different aspects of my work -- voice, aikido, conflict resolution -- into a coherent package.  But I had a basic image that I'd been using and that functioned pretty well.  As it turns out it wasn't the whole me, nor was it the whole of my work. In the Japanese martial art Aikido there are two central elements.  One is learning to flow and blend with energy.  The second is the power you gain when that happens.  Aikido is a very powerful martial art. It is not resistant, but it is not passive.  Verbally, we use aikido when we are clear about our position while acknowledging others, and when we use words to connect instead of attack.  I have always identified with the flow of aikido but found it more difficult to engage its power.  Similarly in life I find it easy to blend (listen, acknowledge, agree) but more difficult to use power (state my position, ask for what I want, say no).  My image on paper reflected that too.

In my aikido practice -- and in life -- I'm learning to be more powerful, and it's fun.  I throw harder, and I communicate more powerfully.  But it's not always easy because my image (both of myself and reflected in others) says that I'm a "nice" person.  And that "nice" image conflicts with a "power" image.  Powerful people aren't always nice, and nice people aren't usually powerful.  But is it possible to be both -- to blend and be powerful at the same time?  In fact, aikido's message is that true power lies in blending.  Power without blending is destructive.  And to blend without power is to lose our center.

Now back to my image control problem.  The graphic reflection of my work initially challenged my self image.  But the timing was perfect.  Just as my work was evolving to include the powerful aspect of aikido, my colleague captured that power and clarified it graphically.

Critical Questions
One of life's ongoing conflicts is the question "Who am I?" Both personally and organizationally we need to address this conflict periodically and to ask ourselves who we are and whether our inner and outer images are accurate.  To flourish as an individual or a corporate entity, this kind of clarifying conflict is vital.

Annie Dillard said:  "How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives."  We all need to revisit our image on occasion, because it forces us to ask the important questions that must be asked if we're going to create the life -- the organization, the school, or the company -- we want, one that is uniquely ours and that we love.  Our ultimate power is not the power to control how others see us but to appreciate and bring to light the undiscovered parts of ourselves.   As we move forward in life, our evolution has a natural flow to it.  Am I enjoying my work or am I struggling?  Do I create my life anew each day?  What energizes me?  Where am I going and to what end?  Important questions for all of us this year, this day, this moment.

Article Body:
Some time ago, I had a friend come to me. They were in desperate need of my services as a therapist to help them overcome some of the challenges in their life.

Bill, as we will call him here, was unhappy, suicidal, virtually bankrupt and generally not in a good place.

I worked with him for three straight hours, helping him resolve his issues and create an action plan so he could move on and break through the blocks that were holding him back.

After the session Bill apologised to me for being in such a bad way and asked what he could do in return for all the help that I had given him.

As you do in this sort of situation, I just smiled and said nothing, it's my pleasure to help.

He looked at me and said, "But I've got to do something to repay you for everything you've done for me." The look of worry and concern on his face for not being able to pay me back struck me.

At that moment, I had a revelation. I could insist that he did nothing and send him on his way. But However, I looked at his face and realised that he really wanted to give something in return for what he had received.

I realised that the best way I could give anything to him at this point was to accept his offer and say yes. Doing this, I honoured him and I made him feel very special and wanted.

I replied to him, "Do whatever you feel appropriate."

He smiled, agreed, and changed the subject.

A few days later I had a phone call from Bill. He told me how well he was doing and how good life was feeling for the first time for months. He also invited me over to his house the next Friday night. I asked what for and he just said, "Just be there at 7pm."

There was no arguing with him.

7pm Friday arrived and I rang his doorbell. He opened the door and smiled when he saw me. "Welcome, come in Jason, it is lovely to see you," he shook my hand firmly and ushered me in the house.

He then looked at me and said, "You did so much for me the other night, I know you are a really busy person and I just wanted to do something to thank you."

Now Bill knew me pretty well and knew that two of my biggest passions were books and pizza. I have thousands of books on all sorts of subjects and collect them passionately.

He sat me down and gave me a glass of wine and we chatted for a while. Eventually Bill said, "Now, you did a lot for me the other day and I really appreciate it. I can't afford to pay you fully for your time."

At that point I started to mutter that it was not necessary, he was a friend, and so on.

However, he continued anyway, "So I have a little something for you instead."

He pulled a box out from under the coffee table and passed it to me. "These are for you to say thank you."

"You didn't need to," I said, feeling a little uncomfortable, and I opened the box. Inside were a stack of old paperbacks. I pulled them out and started to look through.

"It's not much I know, but I know how much you love books, and I had these in the attic and thought you would really appreciate them." Bill looked at me, a huge smile on his face.

The box contained about two dozen self-help classics dating from the 1950's. I was surprised and amazed.

"I want you to have this as a thank you for everything you have done for me and for helping me get myself sorted again." Just then the doorbell rung and Bill jumped up with an even bigger smile on his face, "Pizza's here" He said as he bounded to the door.

By giving Bill the chance to give something back for what I had done for him, it had boosted his self-worth. It had made him feel good because he had felt an obligation to me. This has been termed "The Law of Reciprocation". That is, when you do something for someone else, they feel obliged to do something back. By allowing them to do so, you can help to make them feel better about themselves and more worthwhile.

Next time someone offers to give you something, ask yourself if it is better for you to receive than give in that situation; by receiving you can often give more than you can imagine.

Go where your energy is strong.

<b>Does the path you're on give you energy just thinking about it? Then follow it.</b> If it doesn't, consider a new direction.

Easier said than done, perhaps, but you can start with small steps. Do you love to sing (write, play tennis, carve wood) but find you don't make time for it? Find a teacher and begin lessons, or block out an hour twice a week to practice or engage in the activity. Is your life of work not fulfilling at the moment? What one change can you make that might release your energy? Maybe you need to have a conversation with your boss or staff, review priorities, or ask for a change that would make you look forward to walking into the place where you spend a third of your life, instead of dreading it.

Even the right path has detours from time to time. Subject each new direction to your energy test. Is it strong? Do you wake up mornings eager to begin? When you're doing this activity, do you forget where you are and what time it is? This is what it means to go where your energy is strong. This principle makes decisions a lot easier and keeps you on the road that's right for you.

Where is your energy strong? Take a moment now to consider the ways in which you spend your energy each day.

How much of it is on target, and how much of it is not?
In what ways do you know when you're headed in the right direction?
Do you have a vision that guides you?

Sit for a few minutes each morning, close your eyes, and visualize what you want in your life. It is time well spent. Good ki!

Nature as a Source of Inspiration for Writing Child Stories

Nature can be a rich source of inspiration for writing a child book. Here are 7 ways that you can tap into nature to uncover material for your children's stories and unleash your creativity.

#1: Flora, Fauna and…

This is obvious, but you can use animals, or even plants, mountains, stones, rivers, etc. as characters in your story. They will probably be anthropomorphic, having the characteristics of humans. For example, a river that becomes angry and turns into raging rapids. You can use nature in this way to help your reader see things from a different perspective. For example, you could make up a story about the animal kingdom (e.g. an ant colony). You might imagine what it would be like to become an ant and see the world from that perspective. Nature may also form the setting for your story. Just remember to describe only what's necessary to move your story forward and convey your message. Don't get bogged down in lengthy descriptions.

#2: The Four Seasons

Not the musical group but the four seasons of winter, spring, summer and fall. These could be an integral part of your story, not just the backdrop to it. The fable of the ant and the grasshopper is a good example of how the seasons can propel a story forward and be a metaphor, too. A beautiful example of how you can use the seasons as both a metaphor and a setting is the Korean film "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring Again".

#3: Cycles

More than just the four seasons, nature is full of cycles: life and death; healing; pregnancy and birth; maturation; etc. A common theme in many children's stories is the maturation or growth of the protagonist. The hero or heroine of the story overcomes obstacles and becomes stronger or more mature in the process.

#4: The Elements

Did you know that each element has a concept associated with it? Air = Thought, Fire = Desire, Water = Emotions, Earth = Stability. In Chinese philosophy, the elements are also linked to parts of the body. This gives you three dimensions to play around with: elements, concepts and parts of the body. The elements themselves could be anthropomorphic reflections of the different concepts and their interplay could be a metaphor for human being's difficulties in finding balance between thought and emotion, desire and stability, etc.

#5: Astronomy

The universe or astronomy (sun, moon, planets, stars, etc.) is another possible source of inspiration. The planets can be anthropomorphic characters or can be manipulated by the characters. Characters that manipulate the planets represent a theme often found in mythology and even modern-day stories such as "Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me"

#6: Nature's Patterns

As we all know, nature is very complex, yet elegantly simple at the same time. Natural dynamics such as evolution and propagation could be an interesting element in your stories. You could, for example, explore how a creature has evolved over time (this could be a good sci-fi story).

On another level, there are also little truisms in nature. Remember when the giant sea monster threatening to devour the Jedi Knights in one of the Star Wars films gets swallowed whole by an even bigger monster? Qui-Gon Jinn, the Jedi, then says wryly: "there's always a bigger fish."

#7: Study and Absorb Nature

If you want to really be inspired, try just sitting somewhere in nature and observing it in all its splendor. You may discover interesting (anthropomorphic) behaviors or larger patterns. You will also become more relaxed and when you're relaxed it's easier to be creative.

Conclusion

These are just a few ways you can get inspired by nature to make up child stories. I'm sure you'll think of more. I think nature is particularly interesting as a source of inspiration because it is awesome and powerful, neutral (with "pure nature" there is no good or bad per se), beautiful and perfect. It's pretty hard to improve upon nature.

P.S. If you record or write down any of your stories, you can send them to me and I'll publish them on my website with your name (and copyright) on them.

A few years ago I caught part of a major network news program on genius children and their's and their parent's experiences with public schools pressuring them to place these children on Ritalin. Some of the parents being interviewed had found alternative ways to deal with their children's issues, that didn't involve years of drug use, such as Ritalin.

In this same program, a person from a national organization of American geniuses expressed concern that if Edison or Einstein were in public school today, that they may likely be diagnosed with ADHD, and drugged into "normalcy" so that they could "fit in."

In 1999, the Center for Pediatric Research, at a children's hospital in Virginia found that 8 to 10% of students were receiving drug therapy for Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, commonly known as ADHD. Trends show that these numbers are likely to be increasing dramatically.

In a 2005 interview with the New York Times, James T. Webb, a clinical psychologist and author of "Misdiagnosis and Dual Diagnosis of Gifted Children and Adults," explained, "Behaviors of many gifted children can resemble those of, say, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Most teachers, pediatricians and psychologists aren't trained to distinguish between the two. Most gifted kids are very intense, pursuing interests excessively. This often leads to power struggles, perfectionism, impatience, fierce emotions and trouble with peers. Many gifted kids have varied interests, skipping from one to the other - a trait often misinterpreted as A.D.H.D."

In the network news program mentioned at the beginning of this article, one of the children's mothers explained that her child had been obsessed with the state of the global environment, and agitated by that. This was deemed to be "abnormal" by the school, and was part of the reason for the decision to place her on Ritalin.

It is entirely possible that a child who is a genius was aware of the long known dangers of global warming, and the unrelenting trends of continuing rises in CO2 emissions worldwide. After having seen the recent documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," we would have to admit that such a child was "ahead of her time," by becoming concerned and appropriately agitated by this issue, before the general public became concerned. It is very possible that these "agitated" children could become the "rabble rousering" adults who found and organize human rights, environmental, and other visionary movements that improve the lives of all of us.

This is what geniuses do. They see danger and possibility ahead of the pack. Without their ability humanity may well still be swinging rudimentary clubs, and living in caves. Advances weren't instantaneously seen by all members of a tribe or society, but certain members of the group had insights that quickly became adopted by the others. Without those who possess the ability to be dissatisfied with the status quo, and driven to distraction from the normal everyday tasks, to vision in a greater awareness . . . human advance does not occur.

Today, our planet is sagging from the weight of 6 billion human inhabitants, and in our lifetimes this may reach 9 billion. The demands for food, energy, water, and other resources will take on a screaming shrillness that may drive our world mad . . . "UNLESS" we find new creative ways of living in a finite world (in terms of physical resources) by tapping into the limitless mines and oceans of human consciousness and creativity.

So, it becomes obvious that we are not only in dire need of the new generation of geniuses entering our public schools. But, in fact, we all need to become more creative in the future. When examined, the possibility of creating educational opportunities where gifted children, or geniuses, can flourish and offer positive influence to other students with their unusual and unique concepts of reality seem simple. Creating smaller class sizes, give students opportunity to expend energy expressing and interacting with teachers and other students. The College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, suggests that smaller class sizes, while beneficial for all students, are particularly beneficial for students with ADD/ADHD.

Physical education is also an outlet of energy that can help all students, as well as those with ADHD. Yet, according to the National Children and Youth Fitness Study (NCYFS) II, overall only 36% of children/youth participate in physical education class on a daily basis, and less than 30% of class time is spent in actual physical activity.

So, the first requirement to end a dysfunctional educational process that may be causing untold numbers of our new geniuses to be often unnecessarily "normalized" with institutionalized, and often mis-diagnosed drug addiction, is for our nation to dedicate itself to funding education in a way to reduce class sizes and to increase physical education and activity in all our students.

But, there may be another even greater opportunity that can be found in implementing the aforementioned education format solutions. A recent study from the University of Miami School of Medicine, on teenagers with ADHD, found that an ancient Traditional Chinese Medical exercise therapy can profoundly improve the lives of teenagers with ADHD.

Researchers reported the positive effects of Tai Chi on the adolescents with ADHD parallel the positive effects for adults including reduced mental and emotional stress (Jin, 1992) and improved mood (Jin, 1989). Although stress hormone levels were not assayed in this study, the adolescents were perceived by their teachers as being less anxious, emotional and hyperactive following Tai Chi. The adult literature has reported reduced stress hormones (cortisol) with Tai Chi (Jin, 1992).

Tai Chi research on adults has identified changes in cardiovascular, respiratory, electroencephalographic, and biochemical levels (e.g., lower cortisol stress hormone levels) (Brown, Mucci, Hetzler, & Knowlton, 1989; Jin, 1989). Reduced sympathetic activity, or enhanced parasympathetic activity, has been considered a potential underlying mechanism (Hsu, Wang & Kappagoda, 1985). This mechanism might also account for the marked behavioral changes observed in the adolescents in this study, their research report concluded.

If these profound benefits are realized, why only have students with ADHD practicing Tai Chi daily at school? Why not, include all students, teachers and administrators of all public schools? To have calmer, clearer thinking teachers and administrators, as well as students would have a spider webbing benefit that could improve the educational experience on many levels, for all students, and not just those with ADHD. Creative solutions to complex problems are inhibited by stress in any workplace, including in our increasingly complex schools. Our students, their families, and in time, our nation is benefited by calm clear thinking educators, or conversely diminished by stressed out less creative educators.

A recent study by David Beversdorf, an assistant professor in Ohio State's department of neurology, and Jessa Alexander, a research assistant in the department, revealed a correlation between medical students' stress levels and their performance on various types of tests. According to Jennifer Graham, a postdoctoral fellow at OSU's Institute of Behavioral Medicine Research,"When individuals are faced with a challenging task, they are less likely to perform well in complex situations." The complexity of educating children effectively to deal with an increasingly complex world is the epitome of complex challenge.

Tai Chi is an elegant exercise or therapy that offers multi-dimensional benefits including, according to emerging medical research, lowering of high blood pressure; reducing incidence of anxiety, depression, and overall mood disturbance; dramatic boosting of resistance to viral infection thru increasing certain T-Cell counts; improving respiration; balance; strength; providing cardiovascular benefit; burning calories; and teaching the body how to move in ways that promote bone and muscle development while reducing strain on the body. In fact, Tai Chi has been found to be gentle enough to be safely practiced even by people with arthritis.

In a school's busy curriculum, to bring together all the various therapies and exercises to students to provide all these physical and emotional benefits, may take up half their day. However, an hour of practicing Tai Chi in a physical education class every day at school could not only provide the above benefits to students that could last a lifetime, but also may provide many more than can be listed in an article. The international health education effort, known as World Tai Chi & Qigong Day, provides a comprehensive "searchable by malady" listing of medical research on Tai Chi and Qigong (Pronounced, chee gong, sets of Traditional Chinese Medical exercise therapies, of which Tai Chi is one of several thousand), at its website, There is a growing awareness with emerging research that there is no other known exercise that provides the multi-dimensional benefits of Tai Chi all in one simple and absolutely safe exercise.

With a twelve year education, there is no reason why students do not graduate from high school as Tai Chi masters. If they did, what could that mean to society? Heart disease, a leading cause of death in America, with massive financial costs could be dramatically reduced according to emerging research if our children were massively trained in the preventive therapy known as Tai Chi. The rapidly growing demand for anti-depressants could be profoundly reduced by adults who'd spent 12 years of public education becoming Tai Chi masters, thru one hour per day of training in Phys Ed class. Today the 6th leading cause of death in senior citizens is due to complications often from simple falling injuries due to diminished balance. Costing Americans over $10 billion annually. An Emory University study finding that Tai Chi could cut the risk of those falls in half, portends massive monetary savings by all Americans in future years, IF students are educated now in Tai Chi.

The potential savings in an economy that spends over $1 trillion annually on healthcare, and will only increase as population increases, is staggering to contemplate. These savings dwarf the relatively minimal amounts it would require to fund our education systems to reduce class sizes, provide physical education daily to all students, and teach all students Tai Chi for 12 years. The minimal costs of Tai Chi are noted in a recent report in the June 5, 2006 International Herald Tribune, "[Tai Chi] is an art that needs no special place, fancy equipment or expensive outlay, and its regular practice can build up grace, beauty and strength in a remarkable way, whatever age one may be."

This ancient elegant, simple, and inexpensive solution to a myriad of challenges facing our education system and society at large, perhaps could be a model for other challenges facing society, locally, nationally, and internationally. As the earlier referenced researcher mentioned, we handle complex challenges better when less stressed. If the ancient mind/body technologies developed over hundreds of years by Traditional Chinese Medical researchers, that have now spread to virtually every nation on the globe, were implimented in the way emerging medical research indicates they should be by government, business and healthcare worldwide . . . we could literally see a new world within a generation. A calmer, clearer, and healthier world.

Tai Chi Chih (a unique health regimine evolved from Tai Chi) has been used in major prison systems like Folsom Maximum Security Prison in California. Initial reports (from imate organizers of the program) indicate that "incident rates" have gone down in Folsom since the program was implimented. Research also shows that such ancient Chinese health therapies can help in drug rehabilitation programs. When the cost of law enforcement, court costs, rehabilitation, and prison costs are added up, any opportunity to train young people in public education with life tools that may help them avoid even the need for such costly institutions, must be fully explored.

The future is ripe and inviting, if we can breathe, relax, and open to our creative potential enabling us to embrace the hope dangling in front of us like a ripe apple. And by cultivating and celebrating the emerging generation of potential geniuses in our schools, rather than drugging them into "normalcy," may open the gates of hope far beyond what we can even envision at this time.

Astrology is a type of divination based upon the idea that information about the future or about a person's personality can be discovered through the examination of heavenly bodies such as stars, planets, the moon, comets etc. Astrology means the study that assumes and attempts to interpret the influence of heavenly bodies on human affairs. American Heritage Dictionary defines Astrology as the study of the positions and aspects of celestial bodies in the belief that they have an influence on the course of natural earthly occurrences and human affairs. The practice of astrology was prevalent in the ancient times too. Some of the well-known civilizations of the world used this field extensively. For example, the ancient Chinese civilization, the Egyptian civilization, the ancient Indian civilization, etc all practiced astrology at some point or the other. Arabs too practiced Astrology before the advent of Islam. The ancient Babylonians were probably the first to use Astrology. After that this science moved to countries like China and India. Greek astronomer Ptolemy was the first ever person to write a book on Astrology. He codified the sun sign astrology that we know today.  Ptolemy tried to predict the positions of celestial bodies relative to each other and the earth through knowledge of their orbital motions. During his time, astrology was a part of astronomy. Later, astronomy became an exact science and Astrology remained a part of Theology. Planetary observation is the basis of Astrology.

History of Astrology is an important part of civilization and goes back to the early days of the human race. Apart from being centers of learning in medicine, Baghdad and Damascus were also known as centers of astrology and astronomy. Arabs were pioneers in astronomy before the advent of Islam. The Babylonians were the first to name the days of the week after the Sun, Moon, and planets. They were also the first to set out the twelve houses of the horoscope. Egypt was one of the most important places in the development of astrology. It is thought that some of the astrological signs of the zodiac originated in Egypt. Astrology was practiced even in the Vedic times in India. Astrology is one of the six disciplines of vedanga. The Hindus believe that human fortune or misfortune in life is due to karma, and karma is believed to be influenced by the movements of the planets. Among the Hindus, Brahmins are considered to be the best authorities on astrology. In Modern India too, astrology is extensively used to determine the future and improve life. Astrology is studied and practiced by many in India. It is regarded as vital in Indian culture. It is used to make decisions about marriage, starting of new business, and moving into a new house etc. Ancient Hindu Scriptures too gives a lot of importance to the various aspects of planetary motions and its effects on humans. Chinese astrology stresses on the five elements, metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. Even the zodiac signs used by them are also different from other forms of astrology. China was isolated from the western for a long time. That is why Chinese astrology was unknown to the western world. As Chinese astrology developed independently, a lot of difference can be seen between the western concepts of astrology and the Chinese version. But the Chinese and Indian astrologers were in touch every now and then. Therefore, these two schools have a few things in common. In spite of the geographical isolation, there are a few surprising similarities between the western and the Chinese thoughts on astrology. It can only be termed as a coincidence. Even though the science of astrology was started and developed in the east, the west was never without its share of astrology. Recently, the trend of reading the daily horoscopes have caught up the western world. Suddenly, the western world has woken up to the possibility of knowing and improving their future with the use of astrology. More and more westerners have started to believe in the possibility of getting affected by the powerful planets and stars. Western scholars have included the subject of astrology in their research. Astrology was never scrutinized and researched ever before the way it has been done over the last few years. The astrologers in India claim that it is a scientific method to predict the future. They still club this field of study within the parameters of Hinduism. They say they can prove that astrological predictions are indeed scientific. Hindus almost unanimously believe in astrological predictions. In fact, religious Hindus cannot imagine life without Astrology. More and more Indians have started to build their houses according to the principles of Vastu Shashtra. This ancient Indian tradition is also governed by astrological implications. Hindus believe that the overall prosperity and benefits of the occupants is dependant on the Vastu principles while building the house. Feng shui is one of the ancient Chinese practice of placement and arrangement of space to achieve harmony with the environment. It is also an off shoot of Chinese Astrology. This again is said to be scientific in nature.

About 15 years ago a good friend of mine died, he was 45 years old. He had cancer. Although we didn't meet often, I lived on one side of Australia and he on the other, but when we did there was no stopping us. We used to laugh a lot and talked for hours on end.

He had a loving family, his own business, he was a happy, successful man in every way. We all knew he was going to die, yet strangely, there was no sadness in his eyes and none of us felt uncomfortable about being around him or even talking about the inevitable. There was this strange peace, calm about him. No rush, no bitterness, do dramas. When I asked him how he felt about life and dying, this was what he said:

"When I was a child we had two dogs in the yard, in those days you didn't think twice about tying them up, not like today. So they were both tied up, heavy gage stuff you know, just to be on the safe side. One of the dogs was just lying around all day. Nothing seemed to stir it. Had his drinks, feeds at the same time, day in, day out, lying or sleeping all day. If people walked past, he would just look at them from the corner of his eyes without much bother and then go back to what it was doing before, nothing.

The other one was a different story. It was full of energy or maybe even anger. Always rattling his chain, always fighting against being tied up; wanting to get free, one way or another. Barking at everyone at every opportunity, trying to draw attention.

I'll never forget those two dogs and the two different ways they chose to deal with their lot. One, having resigned to his fate and the other fighting in every possible way he could to change it even though it was, unfortunately, quite futile.

I see the same with people. One lot, who have said YES to life and the others who have said NO. I'd made the decision then that I will say YES to life, live it to the fullest, making the best of every opportunity. Live every day as if it was my last, making sure that I would not have regrets of not having done something or not making the best of my time on this planet of ours or leaving any unfinished business behind."

We kept on talking all night just as we did so many times before. That day was a turning point in my life. My friend became more to me on that day. He became my mentor and role-model. I've tried to follow his examples, making the best of what I'm given and living every day as it was my last.

Do YOU; think about it!

To a fulfilled life,
Ference

"The power of discovery enables us to achieve excellence without having to be "perfect.'"

– Thomas Crum, The Magic of Conflict

I arrived at the conference center ready to present my workshop. Almost immediately I noticed the room was too small and it was not set up as requested. There were no flipcharts and there were tables, though I had specifically asked for open space. I caught myself and smiled. I drew the word D I S C O V E R Y in large letters on a piece of newsprint and put it at the front of the room as a reminder.

Discovery
One of my favorite words, the concept of Discovery excites the brain, conjures up lost treasure, desert islands, new inventions, and old relics, something that was – up to now – unknown.  Explorers discover new lands, scientists discover cures for diseases, and philosophers seek to discover the truth.

What about discovering each other?  Learning what is new and important in each of our neighbors, friends, family, colleagues; what has been lost in the daily grind of work; truths, values, and hopes that are yet to be revealed? Discovery. A lovely word.

I first came to appreciate Discovery in The Magic of Conflict, where Thomas Crum describes it as a magical domain that "allows us to move beyond the fight, beyond success, to an open realm of possibility." When we're in Discovery mode, we are spontaneous, curious, fascinated, and appreciative of life in all its diversity.

Young children live in Discovery and sometimes we do. Katharine Hepburn lived a life of stardom but never lost her childlike fascination with people and life. Thomas Edison's famous quotation after many attempts at inventing the light bulb shows a person in Discovery mode: "I have not failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that won't work!"

Perfection
What's the opposite of Discovery? Perfection – a place with which we're all too familiar. In Perfection, things have to be done right, we have to look good, get good grades, and win the games we play. Our standards are high, and failure is to be avoided at all costs. In daily conflicts, sometimes at the expense of our dearest relationships, we have to prevail. When we feel attacked we fight back, sometimes with our own hurtful words, or with behavior calculated to control, manipulate and diminish.

Shifting Gears
According to Tom Crum, when we shift into Discovery, we treat mistakes as outcomes and conflicts as opportunities to learn and understand more of the world and our partners. We stop being afraid to fail because there is no failure, only increased awareness and experience.  We enter a world of wonder, spontaneity, and fun.

What Can I Learn Here?
We shift into Discovery, not with judgment, but with awareness – by moving from "How can I be right about this?" to: "What can I learn here?"

When I'm angry because I just missed a three-foot putt, Discovery changes self-judgment into an opportunity for learning.

In the middle of a tough meeting with your department manager, try asking yourself - "What can I learn here?" What is it about this issue that's important to each of us?

Upon arriving home, you find your life partner upset.Your first reaction is that it's something you did. But wait! "What can I learn here?" jumps into your thoughts, and you ask: "Honey, you seem upset. Anything I can help with?" And you hear: "I'm just worried that I won't finish this new project they gave me at work in time."

Or your teenager is exhibiting new habits that have you worried. It's worth checking out what the worldview is from her perspective before reaching a judgment.

We've all experienced moments of Discovery when we break through to a new understanding. It's a powerful place that we like and want to revisit.  The challenge is to choose to go there on purpose, especially in difficult situations.  Katharine Hepburn has been quoted as saying, "Wouldn't it be great if people could get to live suddenly as often as they die suddenly?"  Shifting from perfection to Discovery is the way.  Try it.  Discover for yourself.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I'm sure most, if not all, of you know this old story, but I'm going to tell it anyway. (Don't stop me if you've heard it!)

Two old prospectors are arguing over the best way to train a pack mule. The first one maintains that you have to be extra firm with a mule from the beginning--just to let him know who is boss right away.

The other prospector maintains that you have to be gentle to win over a mule; you have to speak to him softly and sweetly. Then, he says, you can get the mule to do anything.

The first prospector doesn't believe a word of this and asks the second to demonstrate.

The second guy agrees and then picks up a log and hits the mule square on its head.

"What do you mean--be gentle?" the first one asks. "Is slugging him in the head being 'gentle'?"

"No, sir," the second prospector replies. "But first, you gotta get his attention!"

Now, my point in telling this story is that it is an analogy for how I'd like for the Lord to speak to me. No, I'm not a masochist. I don't want the Lord to hit me with a 2x4 across the skull. I just want Him to get my attention and let me know He's really, really there and He's really, really speaking to me! Really! Perhaps some of you will be able to identify with me.

A much better example might be the dramatic way God spoke to Moses:

"Moses was shepherding the flock of Jethro, his father--in-law, the priest of Midian. He led the flock to the west end of the wilderness and came to the mountain of God, Horeb. The angel of GOD appeared to him in flames of fire blazing out of the middle of a bush. He looked. The bush was blazing away but it didn't burn up.

Moses said, 'What's going on here? I can't believe this! Amazing! Why doesn't the bush burn up?'

GOD saw that he had stopped to look. God called to him from out of the bush, 'Moses! Moses!'

He said, 'Yes? I'm right here!'

God said, 'Don't come any closer. Remove your sandals from your feet. You're standing on holy ground.'

Then he said, 'I am the God of your father: The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob.'

Moses hid his face, afraid to look at God." (Exodus 3:1-6 The Message)

(As a side note, I especially love the King James version of Exodus 3:5, where God says to Moses,"Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground." The old language in all its majesty seems to fit a God moment like this. Hey, if He spoke to me that way, I would make sure I drew "not nigh hither" and I'd take off my shoes from off my feet in record time!)

And what if God spoke to us like He did on the road to Damascus one day:

"When Saul had almost reached Damascus, a bright light from heaven suddenly flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice that said, 'Saul! Saul! Why are you so cruel to me?'

'"Who are you?' Saul asked.

'I am Jesus,' the Lord answered. 'I am the one you are so cruel to. Now get up and go into the city, where you will be told what to do.'" (Acts 9:3-6)

Of course, you must understand that in Saul/Paul's example, I'd just as soon skip the 3-day blindness part (see Acts 9:8-9), although the 3-day fast might do me some good.

Am I being clear? The point I'm trying to make is that, from time to time, I'd like one of those Cecil B. Demille, Ten Commandments, Charlton Heston/Moses experiences where, "wooo hooo!", there ain't no doubt that "God is in the building."

But then I realize...

First, I'm sure that, like me, if you've been a Christian for any length of time you've had moments when the hair stood up on the back of your neck; when you've gotten "goose bumps"; when the arrangement of events have led you unmistakably to the conclusion that HE HAS SPOKEN. And you didn't need any wide-screen, Technicolor, or Dolby Digital sound to tell you that!

Secondly, I realize that what I really want is not these 3D/IMAX encounters with God which may come only once in a lifetime if at all but, instead, the regular, intimate relationship with God that Adam and Eve had with Him in the Garden. They lost this close relationship through Sin, but you and I have regained it through the death of Jesus--the second Adam. His death was the sacrifice of the Ultimate Lamb to atone for our condition. His resurrection and ascension to the Father and our receipt of the Holy Spirit was our salvation, and the total reason that God now sees us without blemish. When He looks at us He sees Jesus, and Jesus is our Mediator.

So, if we've regained it, why don't we seem to have it, and how do we possess it?

God gives us the answer: "'Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.'" (Jeremiah 3:3 NIV)

God delights in revealing Himself to us, and He promises to answer if we call on Him.

Too simple? The Gospel, or Good News, of Jesus Christ IS simple: God does it all because we can do nothing. My relationship with God, through my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, began with an admission and a request. When I admitted my Sin condition and my total incapability to deal with it on my own; when I expressed my belief in Jesus as my Savior and Mediator; when I accepted Jesus' death on the cross as full payment for my Sin--past, present and future, I also turned the direction of my life over to my Heavenly Father. It is by grace and grace alone.

And that responsibility, which I cast on Him, also includes the establishment of a truly intimate, moment-by-moment loving relationship with Jesus Christ.

If I don't have such a relationship, I must ask Him to build it. "Lord, I want to experience You, to walk with You, and talk with You, and HEAR FROM YOU moment-by-moment every day of my life. Lord, as with all things I admit my inability to do this. I ask that You draw me close to You. Make me instantly aware of Your voice when You speak to me. Empower me to practice Your presence wherever I am; whatever I am doing."

Don't argue internally about this. Don't say, "Oh, I'll try, but..." Just pour out your heart to Him. Persist in this attitude. Don't try it for awhile. Adopt it as your own. Just as your salvation came after you asked God, you must ask God to do this for you. We couldn't save ourselves and we cannot live any part of the Christian life by ourselves either. Salvation began with God and our walk with Jesus comes in the same way.

Read John 10. We are the sheep of Jesus the Shepherd. Tell Him, "I am one of Your sheep, Lord. Let me recognize Your voice."

And when you do, mighty things will begin to happen in your prayer life.

There's a song by Twila Paris which speaks powerfully about the intimate, sweet times that can happen when we draw away from the crowd and simply ask God, "What do You have to say to me today?"

The song is "When You Speak To Me."

When You speak to me
When I take the time to listen
There is more than what I think I feel

When You speak to me
When I sit and still the motion
There is nothing left but what is real
There is an answer to every question
The answer is You

And the heavens open when You speak to me
Pouring light into my waiting heart
And the music fills an ocean silently, quietly
When you speak to me

When You speak to me
When You call me and surround me
There is peace to cover any pain

When You speak to me
When You place Your word inside me
I am filled and I am strong again
There is a reason for every longing
The reason is You

And the heavens open when You speak to me
Pouring light into my waiting heart
And the music fills an ocean silently, quietly
When you speak to me

My brothers and sisters in Christ, I know you long to commune with Him--deeply, intimately and regularly. And there is a reason for this longing: Him. God longs to have that relationship with you. When you are there, the heavens will open for you. He will surround you. He will pour light into your waiting heart. And He will place His word inside you. Take the time to listen--to Him, right now.

Love,
Brother Bill

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

"Here I am, Lord
Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night
I will go, Lord
If you lead me
I will hold your people in my heart"

(Words and Music by Dan Schutte, 1981; adapt. by Carlton R. Young, 1988)

A few years ago my dear friend, Robbie, gave me new insight into the significance of this song. We must have been singing it in a service and I told her how much I liked it. She said something like, "But have you ever thought of the seriousness of the words--about what you're saying when you sing this song?"

And, therein, lies the beginning of another journey with the Lord...

I had to admit to her--and myself--that, no, I really hadn't thought much about it. The song is so upbeat and we usually sing it with such enthusiasm that it gives the impression that I'm ready to do anything for the cause of Jesus. "Send me anywhere, Lord! I'll do anything! I'll go to Africa (or the popular third-world country of the month) and be a missionary! I'll lay my life on the line for You, Lord! I'll drop everything to serve you!"

But then I begin to sound like Peter--the pre-crucifixion version--ready to walk on water, even get in front of Jesus' face and stop Him from going to the cross, or run out and cut off someone's ear,. Peter was ready all right--before the arrest actually came and he was recognized by an adolescent girl.

Poor impulsive Peter. Yeah, and poor reluctant me! And perhaps I am not alone in not really considering the cost of volunteering for duty.

The song comes from Isaiah 6, where the prophet says, "Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?' And I said, Here am I. Send me!" (Isaiah 6:8 NIV)

The Lord's call can elicit varied responses from us, but basically they seem to fall into one of two categories. The first one--the one Isaiah gives--might be termed:

"What do you want me to do, Lord?"

To be fair, let's look at the event that led up to Isaiah's rush to volunteer--with no details about what he was to do, I might add.

"In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

"And they called to one another: 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.'

"At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

"'Woe to me!' I cried. 'I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among the people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.'

"Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, 'See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.'
(Isaiah 6:1-7 NIV)

At this point, Isaiah, steps up front and center and volunteers.

Now, although none of us are probably called exactly as the prophet Isaiah, he was just a human being--as are you and I. When I put myself in his place--as little as I can imagine it and feel it, it's a vast understatement to say that this was quite an impressive scene.

Let's say that any of us has witnessed such a spectacle. The often overused word awesome comes to mind. Although it is used to describe everything from a movie to a praise and worship song and more, surely no one would argue that it is misused in this regard. In fact, it falls short of describing the effect of being in the presence of, and beholding, Almighty God. Moses could not see the face of God because it would be fatal, but Isaiah apparently does such a thing and, naturally, believes he is not long for this world.

Then his lips are made clean by one of the seraphim (highest order of angels) who serve God.

THEN, Almighty God asks the all-important question. I'd like to think that, under these overwhelming conditions that I, too, would raise my hand in the air and wave it wildly like a kid who finally knows the right answer in school and say, "Me, me! I'll go!"

But then, I come back to the reality of my real life and I realize: Many times I know as well as I'm sitting here that the Lord is calling me to do something and yet...I...hesitate. Oh, if it falls into the category of calling the equipped, I'll gladly answer the call. "Yes, Lord, I'll go." In fact, these times usually call for me to do something I know entails the use of gifts and talents I know I have, and are well within my comfort zone. To be honest, I don't have to even wait for a call in these situations but often tell Him, "Lord, let me serve here."

Now, I'm saying this in full recognition that God does give us particular gifts and talents and directs us in their use. And we are expected to use them. He knows us better than we know ourselves and gives us outlets for service which are useful in the Kingdom and--surprise, surprise!--are even pleasurable to us. But doesn't He equip the called as well? Might we be called to step out in faith and do something which does not seem to fit in with our individual gifts and/or talents?

In those instances--when a challenge is presented in response to my "What do you want me to do, Lord?" -that my question becomes:

"Lord! You want me to do WHAT?"

Now, Isaiah didn't flinch when the Lord told him what the task was:

"He said, 'Go and tell this people: 'Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing. But never perceiving.'

Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes.

Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.'" (v9-10)

I would probably have said something like, "Well, then...what's the point?" It looks like a waste of time and energy, as well as being potentially embarrassing--or worse.

But then that's me--not Isaiah.

The remembrance of "Here I Am, Lord", and the experience with Robbie, came to mind only recently. I've been rereading Prayer of Jabez by Bruce Wilkinson. In writing about how God usually responds to our request that He "enlarge my territory", he says,

"As God's chosen, blessed sons and daughters, we are expected to attempt something large enough that failure is guaranteed...unless God steps in. Take a minute to prayerfully comprehend how contrary that truth is to everything you would humanly choose: it goes against common sense, it contradicts your previous life experience, it seems to disregard your feelings, trainings, and need for security; it sets you up to look like a fool and a loser. Yet it is God's plan for His most-honored servants."

Wilkinson goes on, "For most of us our reluctance comes from getting our numbers right, but our arithmetic wrong. For example, when we're deciding what size territory God has in mind for us, we keep an equation in our heart that adds up something like this:

"My abilities + experience+ training + my personality and appearance + my past + the expectations of others = my assigned territory.

"No matter how many sermons we've heard about God's power to work through us, we simply gloss over the meaning of that one little word through. Sure, we say we want God to work through us, but what we really mean is by or in association with. Yet God's reminder to us is the same one He gave the Jews when they returned from captivity to a decimated homeland: 'Not by might nor by power but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.' (Zechariah 4:6)

"Our God", Wilkinson continues, "specializes in working through normal people who believe in a supernormal God who will do His work through them. What He's waiting for is the invitation. That means God's math would look more like this:

"My willingness and weakness + God's will and supernatural power = my expanding territory."

For all his impulsiveness and reliance on his own strength, when Peter stepped out of the boat in response to Jesus, he started out right, with his eyes on Jesus. As long as he did that he was okay. It was only when he considered the circumstances that he began to sink.

Lord, let me remember that I do nothing for you out of my own strength; that it is not by my might nor by my power but by Your spirit. Today I step out of the boat relying fully on You.
Today, let me join You in Your work.

Love,
Brother Bill

People with pessimistic attitudes go through their lives fighting their thoughts and emotions every day. If they are rejected for a job position, they feel that they are not good enough to have any job. They start to think that everyone believes they are stupid, and the cycle of pessimism traps them into psychological immobility. In fact, everyone experiences rejection at some time during their lives, but when your mind focuses on the negative aspects of a situation, it is hard to find inner peace.

The first step in finding inner peace is to think carefully about your goals. What are you trying to achieve, and what are you doing that will take you there? Can you realistically reach your goals, or are you setting goals that are far beyond your reach? Do you have any goals? By putting your priorities in order, you will be on the path to peace because only chaos can result from clutter and disorganization of the mind. You can start by setting small goals that can be easily achieved. Then, instead of focusing on failure, you can see the good job you've done in reaching your goal. If you fail to reach a goal, use this situation to learn how to do better next time. Don't wallow in your failure.

When you feel good about yourself, you will have an easier time finding peace of mind. Peace is essential for happiness. If you constantly feel sad, you are living under a great weight that brings you down to a point where you could sink into a permanent state of self-pity. Self-pity only encourages negative thinking. Remember, you are not the only person facing rejection or hurt in life. There are other people much worse off than you are. People with negative thinking miss out on inner peace because they let every little setback throw them off track. They criticize themselves for no real reason and go down a road that only leads to misery.

Sometimes, hearing the word 'no' is a good thing. If you've lost out on a job, maybe that is for the best. What if you had been awarded a job position only to find out that it was not what you really wanted, or that you couldn't do it as well as you thought? Of course, maybe you like being involved in situations that may lead you to harm. Maybe someone says 'no' to you to keep you from hurting yourself. Maybe they say 'no' because they love you.

Every life is full of rejection, so we would do well to turn our rejections into positive actions. Taking action can lead you to inner peace because activity makes you feel more positive about a situation. Positive attitudes result in peaceful states of mind. If you are feeling bad about yourself all the time, you need to break the cycle and get out of the habit of doing so. You can train your mind to think more positively. It will take work and effort, but it will lead you to inner peace, and this will be worthwhile.

Heart

Word Count:

Summary:
Heart occupies a pivotal position in the human body. You may not arrive at any conclusion after attending a highly intellectual discourse, but a simple "I love you,''will carry a tremendous impact on you. Life is a gift given to man by God and we so much love life—life with its integral part—emotions and feelings. These are important to each one of us, to every life.Without these emotions life would be barren and meaningless. For it is these emotions that make life meaningful or meaningless

Article Body:
It is the heart that swells you up.It is again the heart that sinks you down. Feelings of elation or depression ,that of joys and sorrows spring out of it. If the heart upbeats at times , it sinks low on other occasions. You are impelled and elated by feelings for the welfare of the nation, for the love of mankind, but often you go down with feelings of hatred, jealousy and revenge. With positive feelings you are apt to rise high but negative emotions hurl you to the ground and you are buried with shame and disgrace. As the thoughts are in the heart ,so is the man . It is the feelings that grow up in the heart that constitute the personality of an individual Take the example of Shivaji. His father worked under the mogul emperor. But his mother never allowed his son to bow down before the moguls. Instead she filled her son's heart with the love for the country and Hindu dharma. As Shivaji grew up he conquered many mogul fortresses. But the mother desired that he should defeat the moguls by conquering the strongest fortress of Toran. And Shivaji after conquering this fortress went to his mother for her blessings and putting the sword down on her feet , asked what more she wanted from him. The reply of the mother is to be noted here. She said your body is mine, and I do not need your money,I only ask for your heart,a heart that will ever cling to my ideal.

How much can we speak about this heart whose glories are tremendous. It has a magical power beyond words. In whichever direction it swings it forces one to work.Good feelings raise the person to the heights while bad feelings push him to the ground. Anger, lust, vengeance, jealousy, and hatred can pull down a person ,while love , compassion and understanding can raise him high.. All these feelings ,good or bad ,take birth only in the heart. It is a place that is pure, a place where God resides.Lord Krishna himself says :-

" Indrayualam manushchasme."meaning "I am the heart." "Arjun I am the one who stays in the heart "Ishwar sarvbhutanam hriddashoarjun tishthati
Bhramasyansarvbhutani yantraruhani mayya."
Chapter 18 verse61

We are born with a heart that is pure. But then gradually as we grow up it begins to gather dust.Unpleasant ideas and thoughts crop up.We more than often fail in chosing a right direction, though it becomes a primary duty on our part to control the heart and put it on the right path. Here I am reminded of an instance in the life of Shravan Kumar. He had a feeling of devotion for his blind old parents. On their request he took them both on a pilgrimage. Ill treatment given to his parents by his wife further pushed Shravan kumar's heart to take them away. His heart was happy that he was on a noble nission, to serve his parents. He went around to some places, when all of a sudden his heart took a strange turn. He was overtaken by a feeling of disgust. What was he doing? Only he was ruining his life. Those were the days for him to enjoy. He was young. He had a wife who loved him and he had lovely children. He should be spending time with them.Youth meant pleasure. He ran away fast, listening to this voice of the heart, immediately putting down the scale on which he carried the parents as he feared that he might not change his decision.Running,he got tired. He happened to see a group of men and women who were being addressed by a yogi.He also sat down there to take breath as he was panting. The yogi was trying to elaborate and explain the episode of Ganesh, who circled round his parents and felt that he had traversed the whole world .Lord Shanker was then trying to explain to Kartiki and others present there that Ganesh was absolutely right , because one cannot achieve anything more in this world than by serving the old parents.Shravan Kumar got a big jolt on hearing this.He got highly annoyed with the feelings of his heart that tempted him to leave his parents. He ran back to the place where he had left his parents. He took the rod of the scale on which the parents sat and went on to the pilgrimage with greater joy and satisfaction.

As the heart is,so is the man.

First is our natural instinct, where happiness is momentary and is confined for the time being to the object only.Heart is happy when it hears a sweet melody or views a good sight. It is confined to that moment and is then forgotten.A beautiful sight touches the heart and sweet music refreshes it. It stays for some time only. If these sights are unpleasant the heart is repelled.

The second level of the heart is when it begins to seek the happiness for others,in which it feels lies his happiness also. He tries to work for others,to give inspiration to others, towards a more meaningful life.He goes a little beyond his own self .Self-centeredness begins to melt. Here there is the power to think, to argue and to give lessons to others. He wants to build a structure on the foundation of his thoughts and ideas. For example by writing poems, essays and novels. We have Kabir, Meera, Tulsi to sing and inspire us in Hindi Literature. We have similar writers in other litratures also. The great sages with their pious thoughts rose to give us, The Ramayan and TheGita. These all had put their thoughts of their hearts. The same can be said about great artists, architects and sculptures, who had put their hearts into their creations. They all try to lift us up and speak to the hearts of others through their creations.

The third level of the heart is when together with its own happiness,it seeks the happiness of others also. The sight of suffering seems to hurt him.It wants to lend its helping hand if one wants him.If one is drowning,he jumps to take him out.It is a heart that finds happiness in the motto "Live and help others to live".Such a heart refuses to look for its own interest only. It is a heart that finds great joy in bringing a ray of hope to the distressed..It wants that if he eats,he should help others also to eat. If it is happy,he should create a similar world of happiness for others. If he rises ,he must help others to rise and not cut their throats.

The fourth level of the heart is the highest type which links itself with the Lord.It is the spiritual heart. It cannot bear the sight of suffering. It feels the misery, the misfortune and the pain of others. To make my point clear,I would like to cite an incident in the life of Swami Dayansnd Sarswati.Once a farmer was beating brutally an ox.,because it could not pull the cart which had got struck into the mesh. Swami felt the pain of every blow on his body and could not control himself. He came up,stopped the man from beating the ox. He then took the rod of the cart on his shoulders and pulled the cart out of the mud applying all the force at his command.Such a heart feels a bliss in living for others. It is a spiritual heart. It is a heart that feels the pain of others. This is the highest level of a heart. This is a heart that joins itself to God. It sees God everywhere and in everyone, all woven in one thread of love and understanding. The Lord is all round and the heart opens itself to visualize this truth and be with the Lord. The heart then begins to take only one direction, the love of God, which makes it to love all,men and animals. This is the internal heart ,the heart that is joined to Divinity.A new culture comes up,the culture of widening the heart and the spirit. It then follows its own vision.

But the heart is very unstable, changing at the slightest provocation. One minute it may raise itself but then it is slung into the mud again the next minute. So an important issue before us is how to make it stable. Then, the other question is how to make it rise from one level to another. It runs so fast that it is very difficult to control it,even more difficult than the course of a wind. This was what Arjun felt and so he asked The Lord:-

Chanchlam hi manah Krishna
The Lord says that in reality it is very difficult to control the heart, more than it is to control the force and direction of the wind. But there is no problem that does not have a solution. And what Lord Krishna says is really inspiring:-
Abhyasen tu Kauntai vairagyain ch a grihayte
It means that heart can be controlled by practice and renunciation. It is the practice for something high ,something ideal. If the heart runs away from it do not be disappointed, try to turn it back, do it every time it tries to go off. This is practice. It is quite natural for bad thoughts to overcome the good ones every now and then. But to turn away from them, always remembering the Lord, is Practice.Gradually the bad thoughts will leave the heart. The heart has to be its own guard. What may look impossible in the beginning ,by a spirit of dedication and determination, you can achieve your end. .Practice and determination will work wonders towards a direction of which you and others may be proud of .Whenever there is a turn towards the ugly, turn it towards the good. Practice this. .Remember your determination to succeed in your mission by constant practice will take you on the right path.Sometimes you may go astray,do not worry, continue your practice, try again and again.Do not forget that failures are the pillars of success. There is nothing higher than a heart which is determined to achieve its end, even though it looked impossible in the beginning .This in it self is "tapasya" .. You heart then is your major responsibility. It is the most powerful part of your body. You have a duty towards it. Your "tapasya" is to control your heart, to give it a right direction, a meaningful direction. If you can make your heart , not to waver, with the blow of the breeze of lust and passion, your senses will be pleased and you will be intellectually elevated. The desire to live for others , will enable you to do noble tasks. And finally practicing , you will feel the presence of God within your heart. This feeling will always inspire you to love one and all

So lift your heart, call the Lord to help you in your noble journey. If you have intentions that are good, He will definitely come forward to help you to walk on the path of righteousness Remember He comes to those who call Him and look to Him to move forward in His mission of love and understanding. It is hard to beat a person who never gives up but moves on and on…….

Okay, I couldn't resist flashing back to childishness and old jokes, and I don't have any red paint on me at the moment. Nowadays, you don't need to leave your own home to have an online psychic reading of your future and like everything else, you will find it online. You can even train to be a psychic online because many psychics are offering to teach you how. They "provide clear information" about the latest psychical research with news from "trustworthy" official psychic organizations with the official bodies and federations, along with teaching about psychic abilities and offer to teach you how to do readings. There are classes, study courses, clairvoyance readings practice, just to name a few options. You can learn to read Tarot cards and different practices such as Mediumistic and Rune readings, along with listening to audio recordings of the New Age gurus. Some online psychics invite you to visit their chat rooms and be social with other psychics and meet new people.

There are true psyches around, and the good ones offer their services for the good of others. Many work for police departments looking for missing people or searching for bad people. True psychics are not out to clean you out and some do make a living out of telling people their futures. There are many though that are just complete thieves and those are the ones you need to look out for. They promote themselves as clairvoyants or psychics and claim they have powers that enable them to read a persons future, make contact with a dead loved one, or tell you who your going to marry. However, they are not psychics, they just have the ability to read people well and tell them what they want to hear, and all the while filling their pockets with peoples' hard earned money. Here are a few tips to help you see a fraud psychic.

• The most common method is "cold reading," this involves reading body language, and listening to your voice.

• Over confidence is a good warning, if they build themselves up to were they can do no wrong, watch out!

• Questions about your background. This is unnecessary, if a "psychic asks you where were you born, your parents religion, or even educational level, move on.

• Gaining your cooperation in advance. These "psychics" claim they need your full cooperation and if nothing happens, you weren't a "true believer."

Now, you are not able to see these things with online psychic reading, so you should be very careful when paying for online readings. Try not to take online psychic readings too seriously and use them for what they are there for, to have fun and to satisfy your curiosity about online psychics. Do you really want to know what your future holds for you? Wouldn't you rather be surprised about what exciting things the future holds for you and yours?

Has the Philosophers Stone Been Found? Quantum Science Begins to Understand Ancient Alchemy

Has the Philosophers Stone Been Found? Quantum Science Begins to Understand Ancient Alchemy

Summary:
Historical & Alchemical records are replete with references to what has variously been referred to as "Shew bread" (Jewish), "Manna" (Biblical), "What is it" (Egyptian), "ORMUS" (Zoroastrian as ORMUZD), "White powder gold" (Alchemical origin), "Bread of life", "River of life", "Dragon's blood" & "Philosophers stone". But more recently "Mono-atomics", "M-state" elements & "ORME's" (Orbitally Rearranged Monatomic Elements), etc. Most describe a "magical substance" able to transform anything as diverse as base metals into gold & engendering higher consciousness to even conferring immortality. However let us try to bring us up-to-date through the fascinating work of one David Hudson.

Keywords:
ormus, alchemy, white powder gold

Article Body:
Throughout the 70's & 80's Hudson was totally perplexed by a substance he could not identify… Please let me explain. David was a highly successful Arizona farmer & in the 70's began a gold mining enterprise on his land as a hedge against inflation & to attract various tax benefits. During mining he found what was commonly known to old miners as 'Ghost gold'…However the more he mined the more accumulated, so much so it was actually reducing his precious metal output therefore he had a vested interest to investigate same. Over the next 10 years his 'ghost gold' frustration grew & grew. This material:

1. When dried & exposed to direct sunlight would 'explode' in a flash of intense light but with NO force. 2. Was entirely resistant to any normal form of chemical analysis. He later found they had no real chemistry BUT did have resonance he learnt to manipulate.

3. Was also resistant to normal spectrographic analysis to identify its constituents although in time a method was adopted from Russian spectrographic research to identify it.

4. When purified & heated would lose weight with unchanged volume.

5. On cooling could either gain or lose weight, again with the same volume.

6. At some stages of heating would actually disappear then return when cooled again.

7. Could be made to 'disperse' simply by approaching the stuff with the magnetic field surrounding your hand…As you could imagine his frustration knew no bounds.

Patents & Science. During the 80's things began falling in to place coming via two disparate arenas: Russian Spectrographic analysis & Superconductivity theory. Firstly, during normal spectrographic assays he found the usual method of the '30 second burn' for normal metal determination had to be extended out to the standard Russian method of '300 seconds' for identification. From this he found his 'Ghost gold' actually consisted of huge amounts of the 'Platinum group' of elements being Rhodium, Ruthenium, Palladium, Platinum, Osmium, Iridium & Gold. However as American precious metal assayists did not believe him, he managed to refine elemental Rhodium whilst convincing the management of General Electric (G.E.) to let him use 'his purified metal' in their Fuel cells & jet engine systems. He reasoned that if these devices could only work in the presence of Rhodium then if there was metallic rhodium in his refinements, & the G.E devices worked, then this would 'once-&-for-all' prove his decades of work. As you can probably no doubt tell, his rhodium did work in these applications.

After he developed a method to isolate all these elements, in 1989, he was in a position to lodge world patents describing his method in at least 7 different European countries & even one in Australia.

'Strange substances explained'

Secondly, it was one thing to identify his elements, it was quite another to explain their odd behaviour.

During discussions with some leading American physicists, notably the eminent Hal Puthoff, David learned the only thing that could explain their behaviour was the 1970's discovery of Superconductivity & some late 80's physicist 'Transition element' discoveries. [To jump a long way ahead, Hudson tells that the US Navy, through the use of SQIDS (Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices) could actually see cells communicating to each other…Hudson suggests it is these ORMUS elements which allow for this communication. Therefore Hudson postulates that as superconductors carry electrons as light then it is LIGHT that communicates one cell to the other (see below)].

Later, during 'Thermo-gravimetric' analyses (a highly specialised controlled heating apparatus) Hudson observed that at different temperatures these elements exhibited 'odd' properties (points 4 - 7 above). From these observations he believed he witnessed what physics was beginning to describe as 'transition metal group (the platinum group fall into this) super deformed nuclei'. What physicists observed was that in various conditions these transition elements actually began to 'turn-in-on-themselves' and in this state exhibited no chemical reactivity, defying the normal metallic element behaviour from which they sprang. This non-interactivity was explained because as the nucleus elongated it began interacting with it's own surrounding valence electrons thereby blocking reactions to other elements. Physicists also described these metals exhibited 'ceramic-like powdery' properties. Hudson/Puthoff later deemed these deformed & non-deformed nuclei metals as going into 2 phases, High & Low spin states and whilst in this state, acted as a single atom- viz: displayed quantum (atomic) properties in the 'macro' (physical) form... In Physics this quantum observation is VERY, VERY special.

Further, these High Spin state metals exhibited the weight & invisibility anomalies that could only be explained via Superconductivity theory of which Hal Puthoff's theories predicted. Also Puthoff predicted these elements SHOULD already exist in nature but orthodox, chemical based science could not prove their existence [Hudson tells us these things do exist in much of the foods we already ingest… Indeed he attributes much of the therapeutic benefits of food juices & herbs down to these elements.]

NOTE: A superconductor essentially is a carrier of light in the form of paired electrons called 'Cooper pairs' & exhibits a 'Meissner' field -(Like a magnetic field)- the strength of which depends upon the 'amount' of cooper pairs the superconductor contains.

Where is this all leading?…Mysticism? All this theory, physics & superconductivity sounded fascinating BUT what was the 'bigger picture' here? How could he use these findings, other than simply get rich on it OR go down in the annals of science? In the early 90's while pondering it's significance and reflecting on his US$5 million fifteen-year odyssey, he was approached by a relative waving a book under his nose.

The book described a white powder of gold, being an alchemical extract of various transition metals that allowed element transmutation, invisibility & when ingested, immortality. Hudson was conducting limited experiments on a handful of people who were willing to ingest these products also. What they began to experience was described in many 'Hindu/eastern mystical practices and austerities' as a profound increase in psychic sensitivity (clairaudience/clairvoyance), seeing light beings, a strange yet intriguing sound was noted about their head & an energetic constriction about their throats & chest. Therefore his research began to touch upon the eastern mystical arts…. Where was this NOT going to lead?

During this period David found himself thrust into a 600+ book 'read-a-thon' that inevitably led him on a literary voyage to ancient Africa, ancient Egypt & a history of the Bible. However Hudson had already begun some literary research of his own, into the Pharaohs of the 'Old Kingdom' of ancient Egypt. He learnt that not only were they described as Gods & immortal but that they were fed this 'what is it' by their High Priests. Later he construed that many of the Jews of ancient Egypt were actually metal-smiths & through their foundries manufactured their own 'What is it' (Monatomics). Also Hudson asserts that when the English found a way into the 'Great pyramid' & whilst opening the Kings chamber sarcophagus found it to be empty save for some white powder. Further, he suggests that of all the structure of the great pyramid is found only one word, 'BREAD'. Also that the mummies of Pharaohs of the Old Kingdom had never been found…Were they actually immortal? Perhaps this is why they were never found!

So many questions. So many possibilities!

Some more recent history.

The above represents a condensed overview of a 9 hr video tape, witnessed by the author some seven times in 1997, Hudson made available through one of his 18 North American lectures in the mid 90's. The tapes were used to promote his efforts to attract people & their monies, gifts & help to start production of a plant to produce these elements in bulk. [To the author's knowledge, his tapes are not available but there are various abstracts on the net] The author has kept relatively abreast of Hudson's work through the Internet & other sources only to learn that he managed to raise the monies for plant construction but has been thwarted via various natural events being: In 1998, during construction, there was a major chemical spill & the EPA forced him to relocate, setting him back 18 months & Following this, David had a heart attack requiring 6 bypasses with complications but to all reports has recovered OK. [To my knowledge, no material has been distributed to members to date.] Our comments. It is the year 2006 and it is my view that Hudson's work will prove to be profound probably affecting most areas of life, as we know it as well as opening new vistas to the human experience. Further, the quantum sciences of Superconductivity & quantum tunnelling, Bose-Einstein Condensates, and more, will all be needed to explain this emerging branch of physics to describe this ancient alchemy which will further lead to the scientific understanding of mysticism and indeed spirit itself.
